What is a Shale Play?A shale play is an unconventional underground geologic formation where accumulations of natural gas, oil or coal may be found. Previously thought of as uneconomical to produce, recent advances in horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing techniques have made these plays both accessible and profitable. Natural GasFound in large underground fields, natural gas is primarily methane (CH4). Natural gas is lighter than air and is transported through extensive underground pipelines from the wellhead to the customer where it is used to heat homes and fuel both industry and power-generation processes. There is also a growing demand for natural gas as a transportation fuel.
Natural Gas Operations
It takes a great deal of effort and expertise to locate and extract natural gas. Located miles beneath the surface, high-tech engineering practices are coordinated with environmental guidelines to bring up the gas in the safest manner possible. Learn more about it here.

DrillingChesapeake always looks for safe, secure drillsites. We also strive to identify sites that minimize disruption to the neighborhood or environment, while still producing the most natural gas and providing maximum income for royalty owners — which include homeowners, school districts and municipalities. Learn more about the drilling process. Why is Natural Gas the Best Alternative Fuel?Natural gas is the cleanest-burning hydrocarbon on the planet. And with a price ratio of 1:6 compared to oil, natural gas is an affordable fuel source that is found in a readily available abundance in the U.S. SafetyChesapeake works hard to protect not only its employees, but the surrounding residents and communities in areas where we operate. In 2008, Chesapeake’s Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) was among the best in the industry. Chesapeake’s companywide TRIR was 35% better than the Bureau of Labor Statistics Industrial Average. EnvironmentalChesapeake takes pride in protecting and maintaining the environment in which it operates. The company’s objective is to leave each site in as good, if not better, condition than when it started drilling. Chesapeake partners with government agencies at all levels, and adheres to all local, state and federal regulations. PipelinePipelines are necessary to transport natural gas from the wellhead to the market. While the diameter of a pipeline may vary with its function, the pipelines that currently deliver gas to your home or office pose no additional safety issues. New pipelines may be installed through traditional open trenching, boring underneath the ground or a combination of the two. |
